Chief Umpire praises Dou-liou Baseball Stadium
Chief Umpire praises Dou-liou Baseball Stadium
[Wen Ling Huang]
Richard Runchey, director of umpires for the International Baseball Federation (IBAF), went to Dou-liou and Intercontinental baseball stadiums with tournament director Jan Essleman and other colleagues today.
2008 IBAF Final Olympic Qualifying Tournament will take place from 7th March 2008. Runchey checked the safety standards of two stadiums and praised Dou-liuo one, “It’s beautiful, very beautiful.” Essleman also agreed that, “Intercontinental Stadium is probably the best one in Taiwan, but Dou-liuo Stadium is also very nice.”
While high approval ratings, chief umpire pointed out that some rubbers mats on the warning chain in Dou-liuo ballpark don’t fit very well. The place becomes a bit uneven and this may cause players’ injuries.
Moreover, the area originally designed for photographers is restricted to TV video cameras only now. According to Runchey, “We need to put a fence around this area, in case photographers moving out and impacting the games.” “Only TV, not photographers” is the new principle for that media area.
They later try to pitch on the pitcher’s mound, and found that it is lower than they expected. But the defects above all can be corrected before the match day. “There should be more games and teams playing here,” Runchey said. He hopes more fans can come to this beautiful stadium, particularly for the coming tournament.

Lost and Found
North and South Korea would reunite families separated since the 1950-53 Korean war over a video link this month and face-to-face meetings in May, the Financial Times said last week.
It reminds me of the same situation between China and Taiwan. In 1945, the National Government moved to Taiwan, and since then, many Chinese soldiers had never seen their families again. Until 1987, first visits of relatives to China were not permitted. However, not everyone could wait for such a long time, so many of them died before reunited with their families.
The brutalities of war lead to a lot of tragedy. What a torture if we lose our family members and have no idea of their lives. Fortunately, North and South Korea give them the second chance. These two countries also resume efforts to cooperate with each other. They will expand economic exchanges with trial runs of a cross-border railway.
I appear to see the hope of peace between them, and it also reminds me of the dismantling of Berlin Wall. Personally, I believe Communism would block countries’ progress. As a result, it is good news that North Korea shows its willingness to connect with South Korea again.
With the cross-border railway, North Koreans who suffer slow starvation could realise a little bit. According to an article in The Australian on 5th March, there are more than one million people in North Korea have been cut off from international food aid. They need food from South Korea. Meanwhile, the south hopes North Korea can stop the nuclear weapons programmes. The friendship between these two countries seems to have become an international issue.

Shame of Europe?
“Europe has been trying to integrate its minorities into the mainstream for decades” says an article of Time this week.
In this article, the author, Jumana Farouky, provides five ways to help Europe “turn its multicultural reality into something that enriches the Continent.” He suggests European countries should accept Muslims as their families. Also, the best way to keep the peace in such a cultural diverse area is to start with the kids.
I agree these two ideas. Racial discrimination has existed in this world for a long time. We people should make an effort to treat everyone equally whether in Europe or other areas. However, it is undeniable that racism has been a serious problem even in the 21st century.
Immigrations who have different culture, religions and language from local people, often find it difficult to integrate into their society. In some countries, ethnic minorities suffer unfair treatments from their employers and lower salary than the majority. Well, it stones me. How can we judge people on the colour of their skin alone? For me, people’s appearance only consists of skin, the flesh and bones. Anti-discrimination is not a slogan, but an effort.
Many people are scared of Muslim women, for example, because they cannot be seen behind their veils, which is mysterious or unfamiliar with. It seems ridiculous, but truly this idea is their source of fear. However, my idea is, equally recognizing all religions - includes Islam, protects the role of faith in shaping a person’s identity. It is about respecting difference.
